This is a lovely analysis of cybersecurity career options by one of our members Kwan Yee Chan. Kwan is currently supporting a friend who wants to look into moving into the Cybersecurity industry and is (luckily for us) happy to share her research for anyone else who’s interested in a career in Cyber.
From Kwan:
Embarking on a journey into the world of cybersecurity can feel like stepping into a labyrinth. However, with the right resources and guidance, you can forge ahead with confidence and purpose. Whether you’re a newcomer to the field or seeking to enhance your existing expertise, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get started.
For me, it all started with a simple question: “Where do I begin?” This guide is the cumulation of my research and discussion with tech industry insiders, offering a roadmap to help you thrive in the dynamic realm of cybersecurity.
1. Establish Your Digital Presence

Begin by crafting your LinkedIn profile if you haven’t already. LinkedIn serves as a gateway to industry insights and professional connections. Follow influential organisations like the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to stay on trend with the latest developments.
2. Join Cyber Communities

Join cyber communities such as the Women in Tech & Cyber Hub (WITCH) on LinkedIn and explore community events listed by DFIR Diva (dfirdiva.com) to foster connections and get insights from experienced professionals. Keep an eye out for events like the Security Cleared Expo and the Security Bsides Conference, which provide networking opportunities with companies, and like-minded individuals.
3. Explore Learning Opportunities

Upskill yourself through accredited programs offered by the IASME Consortium. Coming up this summer 2024 is program with 2-3 days training followed by a mentored (and paid) role. Stay alert to the latest news for more information. Browse free and affordable training bootcamps tailored to your learning needs. There are numerous ones listed on the Online Training Resources page. Highlights include on the gov.uk website (search for “find a skills bootcamp”), and platforms like EdX (edx.org) and Coursera (coursera.org). Also, consider apprenticeships listed on the QA.com website.
4. Master Essential Skills

Develop a strong foundation in programming languages such as Python, which is essential to the cybersecurity skill set. Familiarise yourself with SQL for managing large datasets effectively. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and exploration. If you want to challenge yourself, delve into areas like digital forensics to broaden your skill set.
5. Stay Informed and Curious

Cultivate a habit of staying informed about emerging technologies and threats in the cybersecurity industry. Engage with online communities, attend webinars, and explore thought-provoking resources to deepen your understanding. Stay informed and inspired by exploring cybersecurity news websites like Risky Business (risky.biz) and blogs by renowned journalists like Brian Krebs (krebsonsecurity.com). Delve into podcasts like Darknet Diaries (darknetdiaries.com) for insights into real-world cybersecurity incidents and strategies.

Starting on a career in cybersecurity is akin to the first step on an odyssey filled with challenges and opportunities. By arming yourself with the right knowledge, skills, and connections, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate this dynamic field and carve out a meaningful career. So, take that first step, immerse yourself in the journey, and embrace the exhilarating world of cybersecurity.
